Pre-authorisation is a business practice of holding/freezing a specified amount on a credit card making the amount unavailable to the cardholder until either the account is settled, or the hold releases
In the case of credit cards, authorisation holds may last up to 10 days (depending on the issuing bank) after which time the authorisation will release (thus rendering the balance available again to the cardholder)
